03/04/22 – 3/4 length sleeves

They are the worst.

The whole time they are on, I am internally screaming; wishing they could just commit to being mid-tricep or just plain old kissing the wrist.

You want to know who invented 3/4 length sleeves? I don’t know. I spent some time “on the Google” looking it up, but apparently, that information is all hush-hush, because besides Stephanie from Quora, who claims 3/4 length sleeves are “the greatest invention in the history of fashion”, I feel like most people would just want to spam the crap out of the inventor. Sending 3-inch pieces of fabric as a reminder of the shortcoming.

Did you know 3/4 length sleeves are supposedly flattering? According to Heirloom Shirts, they are “drawing the eye toward the waist…perfect for pear shapes”. My mind is blown that they serve this purpose. Honestly, the constant tugging on the sleeves, the pushing them up over the elbow, yanking them back down, pushing them up, yanking them down is probably what draws the eye away from any pears. Also, they are great for people who wear bracelets (not me), people who hate their arms (ok I understand this), and work perfectly for mid-range weather situations (I contest that windbreakers, light hoodies, and flannels will serve this purpose better).

Women are not the only ones subjected to these “shirt deficiencies”. My husband’s robotics team sports 3/4 length sleeves as part of their uniform. I can’t help but laugh when I see him talking with someone and I notice the sleeve tug. He is doing this unconscious of his actions, but like popcorn stuck in the back teeth, the knawing irritation is there; the desire to be wholly comfortable in an incomplete situation. When asked if they could change the design, the team fully acknowledged the complaints but stated “they are tradition at this point” and the sleeves remain.

I chose this topic because I didn’t really have anything to write about and like most first-world problems, they make easy targets for writing and rambling. And while I wish death on no one, I do hope Putin, and anyone who supports him, are plagued with 3/4 length sleeves for the rest of their days*.

That way he can show off his handcuff bracelets.

*however, if something were to happen to that a$$h0le and his cronies I would probably feel something like vengeful joy…

go ahead and judge me.

  1. Wow – amazed at how you got from the nuisance of 3/4 sleeves to Putin, to which I say yes, well done! (I hate 3/4 sleeves too, and identify with everything you said about them. The only comfort is that they seem to be going out of style, at least in sweater form.)

  2. This made me laugh especially because my wife loves 3/4 length sleeves. She looks for them. Her arms get cold with short sleeves. Sleeveless are a definite no-no. Long sleeves are worn but they get in the way.

  3. I’m all about judging Putin and wishing death on him. In fact, I’m praying for it because it’s the only thing that will stop him. Regarding 3/4” sleeves: The worst ones have elastic. So annoying.

  4. Favorite line: “like popcorn stuck in the back teeth…”. I like how you explore your third world problem and yet acknowledge it and give us the world’s problem, with frankness and a helpful link. BTW, I do love 3/4 length sleeves, except when they ride up inside winter coat sleeves.

    1. Fran, I wish I could love them bc, as I did research for this piece (the googling), I encountered some quality counterpoints to my feelings…I just can’t yet. AND your point about the winter coat solidifies my sentiments even further 🙃 – thank you for sharing

  5. I really enjoyed your craft moves with the italics- your sarcasm and incredulity came through so well. I was laughing by the end while also admiring your tie-in to the woes of the world. Skillfully done!!
