Incredible sinking. Why would an email be so vague if there was news worth celebrating?

Gosh, it has been six months since I submitted the application for my ideal doctoral program; the anticipation and time fueling self-doubt.

Many of my colleagues have assured me that I would be accepted without pause. My dearest friend, M, echoed similar sentiments but didn’t dismiss how I was feeling; offering steadfast encouragement.

It has been a long six months filled with what-ifs and dismissive “everything happens for a reason”. I don’t know why, but I just really wanted to be part of this program.

I clicked submit and watched the page change.

I typed out a text to M. She called almost immediately.

and we celebrated. It is happening! I am in!

I typed out texts to my colleagues. They texted red hearts, beers cheers, and promised a future trip to the bookstore for swag.

I waited until the husband came home to share the news with him. He enthusiastically asked me to remind him about the program. I was busy with something so I directed him to my computer with the program’s page open.

He read silently for a few minutes; reviewing the credit hours, the course layout for the next few years.

He looked at me, eyebrows furrowed, and with a touch of exhaustion said, “can’t you just chill?”

I stopped what I was doing, squinted my eyes, tilted my head, pursed my lips. “What?”

No back-peddling, no apologetic congratulatory follow-up, just a simple, “if that’s what you want to do.”

“It,” snapping gum, “is.”

He gets me. In my world, life is too short to ‘just chill.’ Which is why I married someone who is exactly that. Chill. And contrary to his initial reaction, he is wicked supportive. And sometimes lacking tact.

But I love him. I love M. I am thankful for this opportunity and excited about this program.

I can’t wait to get started.

  1. Oh, I forgot about the snapping gum idiosyncrasy. I’m really enjoying your use of italics this year in your slices- they are well done. And congratulations again ❤

  2. Congratulations! Great contrast between you colleges’ responses and your husband’s. Wishing you all the best as you pursue your dream. Hope to hear more about it in future slices!
