Incredible sinking. Why would an email be so vague if there was news worth celebrating?

Gosh, it has been six months since I submitted the application for my ideal doctoral program; the anticipation and time fueling self-doubt.

Many of my colleagues have assured me that I would be accepted without pause. My dearest friend, M, echoed similar sentiments but didn’t dismiss how I was feeling; offering steadfast encouragement.

It has been a long six months filled with what-ifs and dismissive “everything happens for a reason”. I don’t know why, but I just really wanted to be part of this program.

I clicked submit and watched the page change.

I typed out a text to M. She called almost immediately.

and we celebrated. It is happening! I am in!

I typed out texts to my colleagues. They texted red hearts, beers cheers, and promised a future trip to the bookstore for swag.

I waited until the husband came home to share the news with him. He enthusiastically asked me to remind him about the program. I was busy with something so I directed him to my computer with the program’s page open.

He read silently for a few minutes; reviewing the credit hours, the course layout for the next few years.

He looked at me, eyebrows furrowed, and with a touch of exhaustion said, “can’t you just chill?”

I stopped what I was doing, squinted my eyes, tilted my head, pursed my lips. “What?”

No back-peddling, no apologetic congratulatory follow-up, just a simple, “if that’s what you want to do.”

“It,” snapping gum, “is.”

He gets me. In my world, life is too short to ‘just chill.’ Which is why I married someone who is exactly that. Chill. And contrary to his initial reaction, he is wicked supportive. And sometimes lacking tact.

But I love him. I love M. I am thankful for this opportunity and excited about this program.

I can’t wait to get started.

  2. Congratulations! Great contrast between you colleges’ responses and your husband’s. Wishing you all the best as you pursue your dream. Hope to hear more about it in future slices!
